SEO Myths, Misnomers, and Mistakes to Avoid in Your SEO Strategy

seo-mistakesIn the Part 1 of this series I share the mistakes and myths around optimizing code on a website. When it comes to the user visibly seen site optimization. There seems to be abundance of false notions floating around.
If you have not go through the Part 1 of this series please read it first:
For today i am going to share some of the most common SEO myths you should avoid in your SEO strategy.

1. Keyword Rich Navigation:

A common trick that many people used in the past is to stuff keywords into the website navigation. Doing this tactic allowed for important keyword to appear on every page of the website and told the search bots that website is about the particular set of keywords. When google pushed up the Penguin algorithm it specifically target this trick and Bing updated their own algorithm to follow suit shortly after.

2. Keyword Density:

Most likely the biggest fall i see these days is around the idea that if you have right amount of keyword found on the page that will help you rank. In the buzz word for this philosophy is Keyword Density. Over the year some bloggers have stated that anywhere from 3% to 7% of the site content should be focus on the main keywords. This type of advice cause for plattar of tools be created that analyse keyword density in depth. Here is Matt Cutts (Director of Googles Web Spam Team) talking in depth about how there is no way to have a universal keyword density rule in Algorithm.

3. Excessive Pages:

Another common but spammy SEO trick is to add excessive amount of pages in a website. Excessive is defined as adding pages upon pages of content that are low quality. In the past this actually help website rank on multitude of long tail keywords. Often these kind of sites taken original content and with automated softwares change some word in article and replace them with their synonyms of that word. This practice is called article spinning which supposingly create thousand of unique pages of content. when Google did the panda algorithm update it directly targeted spun content and duplicate content, it took care of the line share of the problem. However Bing still does not penalize this tactic so, you will still see site creating worthless content.

4. Avoid Linking Out:

One important aspect about SEO is understanding that each domain and page are judge on the authority hold with search engines. There are lot of elements go into page and domain authority. But one thing that many site are worrying about is given away the domain authority to other sites. The concern is around the idea that the more site links out to other websites, the more site loses authority. This is only true when hundreds of links are go out on a single page. Unless it is necessary that search engine discourage vast link pages. However, many webmasters take precaution to the extreme and wont link out to anyone. Google is go on record stating …
Thoughtful outbound links can help your credibility.

What it translates into is focusing linking to quality but relevant websites. In May 2013 Google release Penguin 2.0, the main focus of this update was relevant linking. With this update this is even more important now to have the site you link to be relevant to the content of that page.

Note:

It is always impotent to test anything you hear about SEO, ven what i have shared here. SEO is in constant state of flux and even though i have worked hard to provide you the sound principles with every reference. I normally quote:
The Greatest Lesson of Search Engine Optimization is Test, Test and Test Some More.
So, keep out works though everything else out :)
